The Eagles Nest

Bunurong Marine and Coastal Park Bass Coast, Victoria

The Eagles Nest is one of a number of interesting photography locations in the Bunurong Marine and Coastal Park between the towns of Inverloch and Cape Patterson. It is a distinctive and unusual sandstone rock formation carved by erosion from wind and water.

Access is quite easy, there is plenty of parking and a viewing area at the bottom of the car park. Take the stairs on the eastern side of the car park down to the beach and walk across the rock platform to the Eagles Nest. It can be quite busy with tourists and can be difficult to make photos without people getting in your shots. I recommend getting there early before the crowds, especially on weekends and holidays. If you are into photographing sunsets and you get lucky with the conditions, early evening can produce some wonderful light on the rock.

Check the tides before you go, it is much better at low tide. When the tide is out you will be able to walk all around the rock and should have no trouble finding interesting compositions. Look for reflections in the rock pools and boulders to provide compelling foreground elements. Try getting down low and shooting along the rock shelves.

It is well worth exploring the area along the cliffs to the west of the beach. There are some interesting alcoves and caves among the rocks.

Take care walking around the area, there are plenty of holes and the rocks can be slippery. Be especially careful if you have your back to the sea, large waves can come out of nowhere.

You could easily spend a few hours here but it's worth making a day of it and checking out a few other nearby spots. The Caves, Twin Reefs, Shack Bay, and the cliffs at Cape Patterson are all very photogenic.
